First Ideas Network 2030 Annual Lecture Global Trends to 2030: The challenges ahead for Europe by Klaus Welle, Secretary General, European Parliament
The organisers of IN2030 have decided to establish an annual platform for leading political figures for them to come to address the major themes of our age with a time horizon of 2030. The purpose of this event was not to predict the future – so many efforts have been directed in this way but to little effect as disruptive events, which by their nature are unpredictable, always seem to intervene. The Covid 19 Pandemic provides an excellent example. Instead, it is by being well informed about major long-term trends underway that an outline of our future destiny can be determined. To set the ball rolling, the IN2030 has been very fortunate to secure the participation of Klaus Welle, the Secretary General of the European Parliament and leading light in the leadership of ESPAS, the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System, which has published 3 major reports on Global Trends 2030 over the past decade. This is now of greater importance in the EU as a Senior Commissioner ( Maroš Šefčovič) has recently been made responsible for foresight in the new European Commission. Vigorous steps are now being taken to ensure that foresight plays a central role in all EU policy areas. This event was organised in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS).
